Daniel Friedmann

P.Eng., MASc., Chief Executive Officer

Daniel Friedmann serves as CE’s CEO and Board Chair. Dan assumed the role of CEO in January, 2022, having served on CE’s board for the previous five years, four of which as Board Chair. Dan brings a wealth of executive experience and success managing high growth to CE’s team. He led Canadian aero-space company MDA as CEO for 20 years, during which time the company’s revenue grew 19-fold and market capitalization increased 35-fold. Dan was named Brendan Wood TopGun CEO in Canada in 2015-2016, a designation awarded as an expression of the highest level of confidence in a CEO, as voted by key investors and stakeholders.

Kerri L. Fox

A.B., J.D., Chief Financial Officer

Kerri brings more than 25 years of finance and corporate growth experience to CE’s team, stemming from previous roles as a project finance banker, financial advisor, board member and lawyer. Kerri previously built and ran project finance businesses from New York for Fortis Bank and BBVA, and acted as Chief Financial Advisor for Steelhead LNG in Vancouver. Kerri has also served on the boards of Alterra Power Corp. and TerraForm Power, and she began her career as an attorney at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley and McCloy.  Kerri holds an A.B. in International Relations and Russian Studies from Brown University, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.

Scott Willis

VP of Technology and Engineering

Scott has over 30 years of experience in engineering, operations and technical leadership and is currently seconded to CE from Occidental. He has served in executive level operation roles in several multinational companies as a secondee for Oxy.  He has over 20 years of experience in operations management in OxyChem including plant manager of a PVC facility in Alberta, Canada.  Most recently he was the Vice President of Commercial Development for Oxy Low Carbon Ventures and led the Oxy investment in Carbon Engineering.  He holds a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.

Lori Guetre

B.Eng, M.Eng, VP and Head of Business Development

Lori brings more than 25 years of engineering, business development, and finance experience to CE’s team, stemming from previous roles in technology and aerospace sectors. Lori most recently served on the MDA Corporate Finance and Strategy teams as Senior Director, Strategic Business Development. At MDA, Lori held a variety of senior executive positions including General Management and VP Business Development. Lori holds a Bachelor’s in Computer Engineering from RMC and a Master’s in Electrical Engineering from Carleton University.

Amy Ruddock

Ph.D., VP Europe and Middle East

Prior to Carbon Engineering, Amy was VP Corporate Development and Sustainability at Virgin Atlantic where she was accountable for setting and delivering carbon strategy, securing expansion at London’s Heathrow Airport, corporate strategy and government affairs. In 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic she co-led recapitalization and solvent restructuring of the airline. Amy previously spent 10 years at BCG in the Consumer Practice Area, leading projects on topics ranging from strategy to transformation; operations to commercial, working across Europe and the USA. Amy’s Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge “Novel sensors for the selective detection of hydrocarbons” combined the disciplines of solid-state electrochemistry, materials and surface science.

Marcus Temke

VP Engineering & Projects

Marcus has 30+ years of experience in the development, construction and operation of industrial plants in the power, petrochemical, chemical, pharmaceutical, and mining industries. He has previously worked in Germany, Switzerland, and Brazil for Degussa/Evonik, Sandoz/Clariant, Rio Polimeros, Eneva/Eon, and Bolognesi. Marcus’ experience has been on the Owner’s side, where he’s managed multi-billion dollar EPC contracts and set up and managed operations of an Ethylene and Polyethylene Petrochemical Complex, as well as several coal and gas fired power plants.

John Bruce

B.A.Sc., M.Eng., VP Strategic Development

John brings more than 20 years experience in building, managing and investing in clean tech based ventures. John’s focus has been on product strategy and management, as VP Business Development and Product Management at Cellex Power, and more recently as an Executive in Residence at Foresight Cleantech Acceleration Centre.

Doug Rae

B.Eng., VP Business Development

Doug leads CE’s international business development activities, creating partnerships with plant developers, investors, and off-takers around the world. Doug brings more than 20 years of international business development experience to CE, having previously served as VP, Business Development for MDA, a leading Canadian technology firm. At MDA, Doug held a variety of executive positions covering general management, business development, and strategy, and led the capture of a wide variety of large-scale projects and new business creation activities.

Anna Stukas

P.Eng., VP Business Development

Anna is a professional engineer with over 15 years’ experience bridging the gap between technology and business to overcome barriers to cleantech commercialization. Anna previously worked with Angstrom Power and BIC developing hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, where her responsibilities spanned IP and licensing strategy, product safety, and international regulatory development. She currently leads a variety of CE’s partnering and strategic business development efforts, and previously led CE initiatives ranging from strategic projects to government programs. Anna’s work has been recognized by the Minerva Foundation’s Women In™ Energy Award for Philanthropy and Business in Vancouver’s Forty Under 40 Award.

Grant Boyle

J.D., M.A., Senior Director, Legal

Grant has over twelve years of experience as a business lawyer, working both inhouse and in private practice in the infrastructure and natural resources sectors. Prior to joining CE, he was senior legal counsel at SNC-Lavalin where he negotiated and advised on multi-billion dollar project contracts and joint venture agreements. Before practicing law, Grant worked in energy and environmental policy development internationally at the United Nations University in Tokyo and held consulting roles with the Asian Development Bank and Vestas Wind Systems. He holds an M.A. from the University of British Columbia and a J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School.

Kenton Heidel

P.Eng. B.Sc., Director, Engineering

Kenton worked as an engineer-in-training at both oil-and-gas EPC firms and manufacturers, in both cases assisting in new product development. After graduating in 2008 from the University of Calgary with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering, he was hired by David Keith to assist with the air capture project that was presented on the Discovery Channel program, Project Earth. Kenton now leads CE’s engineering efforts, overseeing design and development of processes, equipment, and AIR TO FUELSTM plants.

Geoffrey Holmes

M.Sc., Business Development

Geoff has worked on Direct Air Capture of CO2 since 2008, both in an academic capacity and at Carbon Engineering. Geoff has led much of CE’s air contactor research and design, has been involved with several generations of prototyping and testing, and has published on air contactor design and general techno-economics of DAC and fuel synthesis. Geoff now leads CE’s Regulatory Engagement and public outreach efforts.

Jenny McCahill

Ph.D., Director, Projects

Jenny joined CE in 2014 with more than 10 years’ experience on the development of chemical processes for industrial applications. Jenny was a key contributor during the commissioning and early stage operations of the DAC and AIR TO FUELSTM pilot facilities, and led optimization work of current technology and investigations of next generation technologies for process integration. Jenny is now the project manager for the development of CE’s first industrial-scale plant – a facility that will capture one million tons of CO2 from the air each year.

Jane Ritchie

M.Sc., P.Eng., Director, Intellectual Property

Jane is a professional engineer with a master’s in chemical engineering. Prior to joining CE, Jane worked in the EPC industry, gaining more than 5 years’ experience across process engineering design, upgrading, and SAGD projects, as well as production engineering and field operation. Jane started at CE as a Senior Process Engineer in 2011, and led the design, construction, and commissioning of the pilot plant pellet reactor. She also moved into the role of Manager, Intellectual Property and has been an active contributor to CE’s patents.

Hollie Roberts

B.Ed., CPHR, Manager, Human Resources

Hollie has been with Carbon Engineering since its inception in 2009. As the company’s Human Resources Manager, Hollie leads CE’s HR strategy and planning activities, and manages all HR programs and policies as they apply to employee engagement, recruitment, performance management, benefits, and salary. Hollie also oversees the office management and ensures the health and happiness of our team on a daily basis. Hollie holds a BEd in Business Education from the University of Lethbridge and is a Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR).

Toby Stedham

M.Eng. PMP, VP Operations

Toby brings 10+ years of experience in technical project management and operations delivery. As a former Royal Air Force Engineer Officer he held leadership roles across bomb disposal, explosive safety, battlefield helicopter and VIP/air transport operations. Having led technical teams across the UK and a range of international deployments, he is now focused on applying his experience to the cleantech arena. Toby joined CE in 2018 and now leads the operation and maintenance of CE’s Pilot Plant.

Todd Wilke

Ph.D., Head of Technology

Todd brings more than 25 years of technology development and commercialization experience to CE’s team, stemming from previous roles in semiconductor manufacturing, fuel cells and industrial sensors sectors. Todd previously held the positions of VP of Technology for Photon Control R&D where he led the development of optical measurement products, and R&D manager for Ballard Power where he developed and executed fuel cell technology development programs. Todd began his career in technology development at Intel.

David Keith

Founder and Board Member

David has worked at the interface of climate science, energy technology, and public policy for 25 years. As a technology developer and innovator, he built a high accuracy infrared spectrometer for NASA’s ER-2 and developed new methods for reservoir engineering to increase the safety of stored CO2. David was listed as one of TIME magazine’s Heroes of the Environment 2009. David divides his time between Calgary and Cambridge Massachusetts where he holds professorships in engineering and in public policy at Harvard University.

Michael Avery

Board Member

Michael has over 15 years of experience with Occidental developing partnerships and strategic growth plans for businesses and assets on domestic and international projects. Before joining 1PointFive as CEO, Michael held the position of VP Business Development Onshore Resources and Carbon Management. Michael holds a BE in Mechanical Engineering from Stellenbosch University in South Africa and an MBA from Hult International Business School in Dubai.

Rick Callahan

Board Member

Rick Callahan is the President and General Manager of Oxy’s Low Carbon Ventures business. Rick has 35 years industry experience and joined Oxy 14 years ago.  He has held a variety of senior management positions, including roles in the United States, Abu Dhabi and Libya.  Most recently, he served as EVP Midstream Operations & Development, overseeing the company’s midstream infrastructure development and operations of the Centurion pipeline system and Ingleside export terminal.  Prior roles included SVP Development in Abu Dhabi overseeing the development and startup of the Shah sour gas field (Al Hosn Gas), and prior to that as President & GM of the Libyan business unit.  Mr. Callahan received a Bachelors degree in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University and a Masters of Business Administration from Duke University.

Denis Connor

Board Member

Denis is an electrical engineer who started his career at Bell Labs and then moved on to MDA. He was President of the Science Council of BC from 1988 to 1990. He was the founding Chief Executive Officer and President of QuestAir, which merged with Xebec in early 2009. He has been a leader in numerous Canadian green-tech start-ups, including General Fusion, and advises the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade on their support of renewable energy technology companies.

Elias Cababie Daniel

Board Member

Elias has more than 35 years of experience in various commercial sectors worldwide, such as real estate, technology, entertainment, food and the fashion industry, among others. He is an entrepreneur, constantly and actively looking at new business opportunities and ventures in order to continue innovating and expanding his family’s portfolio. He is a founder of GICSA, a dynamic real estate developer in Mexico, as well as GICSA’s Chairman of the Board. Elias is also Chairman of the Board of GlobalLab Corp, with three different consumer product divisions in the safety, health and wellness industries.

Gayle Gibson

Board Member

Gayle J. Gibson is currently a principal with Accordant Advisors, who work with organizations to create cultures of inclusion and stakeholder engagement.  She is a Fellow in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and a Trustee of their Foundation.  Gayle retired from DuPont at the end of 2017 as head of Engineering. Over 34 years, she held a variety of roles across multiple businesses that included chief of staff for the Chair of the Board and CEO, Growth Champion, product manager, manufacturing manager and R&D engineer. Her contributions spanned revamping innovation practices, product & process development, market development, business strategy, supply chain improvement, lean manufacturing, process engineering, research & development and diversity & inclusion.

Michael Hutchison

Board Member

Michael Hutchison is a visionary, private investor and entrepreneur. As the Principal behind Bethel Lands Corporation Ltd., he seeks out sustainable projects to satisfy local community needs. Most notable developments under the leadership of Michael include a General Partnership with the Sea to Sky Gondola and as the President of Squamish Huron Clean Energy Corporation.

Michael was elected to Carbon Engineering’s Board in July of 2016.

Laurie Pare

Board Member

Laurie Pare is Chairman of the Audit Committee of Carbon Engineering. He is a Chartered Professional Accountant and a former partner with Price Waterhouse Coopers LLP. Laurie is also a member of the board of directors of Enhance Energy Inc., a private company based in Calgary which is focused on Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage technology.
